Text: Exodus 20:4-6 ESV
You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
God is speaking to us regarding the foolishness of man’s idols; the things that we create to take his place. In this case it’s wood, but in so many other cases it’s so many other things.
Money has become an idol even though it’s really only a tool. It can be used to build and to support and to provide. And it can also be used to destroy. The bearer determines its value. You can choose to make it serve you. Or you can choose to worship it.
Relationships can be an idol. Needing to approve of someone or having to gain their approval can handicap your life to the point of total disability. Our approval comes from God because of Jesus. No human can compete. We must accept no substitutes.
The objects of your worship will define your god. Investigate where on your list of priorities you place certain people and possessions. Is there room for the one true God? Does he make the list? Is he at the top?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for your Word this moment. I humbly pray that help me to always put you first ahead of everything in my life in Jesus precious name I have prayed with thanksgiving and adoration. Amen.
